Tools to Bring to a Writers’ Conference

by Angella Foret Diehl, OCW Webmaster

foretdiehlsm.pngAs the OCW Web master and one of the organization’s “resident geeks,” you’ll typically see me tooling around conferences with a wheeled suitcase. No, I didn’t spend the night in my car, anticipating the terrific workshops and keynote speaker!

The suitcase is packed with things that help make a conference run more smoothly: a laptop computer, extra cords and mice, flash drives, a projector, a surge protector, etc. I also keep a small printer in my car “just in case.”

As a conferee, you won’t need many of those gadgets to learn about the craft and business of writing from OCW’s finest. But here are a few that can help!

Leave Your Fears Behind

johnson_rs.pngHave you ever longed to find the life God has planned for you? The one that overcomes doubts and fears and helps you move on to success with your writing and personal life? Do you wonder what prevents you from reaching your goals?

Many of us are afraid to discover the abundant life because we are paralyzed by fears, most of them unfounded. Many excellent writers allow worry to keep them from reaching their potential. Thousands of people’s lives may be impacted when our trepidations prevent us from achieving our dreams.

Keynoter Rick Johnson will present “Worth More Dead Than Alive,” a two-part series about overcoming our fears. Rick’s purpose is to free us from the roadblocks that keep us from reaching our God-given destinies. Living our lives with courage and trusting in God’s security will enable us to reach the unattainable in our lives and our writing.

Rick has found a way in Christ to overcome his own fears and to be used by God while building a ministry platform. Reared in an alcoholic home, he overcame significant challenges to become a successful businessman. After finding Jesus at age 40, Rick searched for God’s plan for his life. He says, “No one was more surprised (than me) when God opened the doors and not so gently pushed me into becoming a full-time speaker and author.”

Writer's Prayer - May 2010

Heavenly Father, Almighty Savior, God of Truth, we praise You. As we remember Your holy Word, we bow before You. Jesus is the Living Word who came into the world to do for us what we couldn’t do for ourselves.

His Word encourages us. “In the beginning [before all time] was the Word (Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself” (John 1:1 Amplified).

OCW Doctrine

Founded in 1963, we are an organization of writers, both amateur and professional, who are Christians. Our members write for both ministry and markets, and subscribe to this doctrine:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic (universal) church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

OCW’s doctrinal statement is the Apostles' Creed, to which our presenters adhere. Our aim is to glorify God and to help writers grow in their craft. OCW does not necessarily endorse the theological opinions expressed by its presenters in print or spoken word.
